With Bachelor Degrees in both Guitar Performance and Audio Production, Derek VanScoten has "credentials." However, what sets him apart is his experience as both a performer and educator over the past 10 years.
Derek has been a music educator at CU Boulder since 2005. He has also taught at Naropa University since 2007.
From ages 12 to 25, Derek almost always had a regular music teacher. They included:
-Carmen Carmonica (Jazz Guitarist for the Johnny Carson Show and the Bob Hope specials)
As a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist, Chazz has recorded and performed with artists as talented and diverse as Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Chuck Mangione, Wilson/Phillips, Perla Batalla, David Pack, America, Chaka Khan, Gregory Hines, Sheena Easton, and Vonda Shepard. He can also be heard singing the theme to NBC's syndicated hit sitcom "Saved By The Bell". Chazz currently has two solo CD's available. His first entitled "Perfect Moment" and his second and most recent "My Therapist's Couch". MTC is available via CD Baby, iTunes and various digital distributors. As a session bassist/vocalist, Chazz has appeared on numerous recordings for television and film soundtracks, commercials and jingles, and friends CD projects.
Charles Frichtel quickly moved from student to playing in Carmen's Jazz Trio. Charles accompanied Carmen to Los Angeles to be part of Raquel Welch's new stage show. When that gig was over, Carmen went on to join Tony Orlando's Band and "Chazz" stayed on the west coast and did quite well for himself.
Even more success stories ...
Samuel Oliva studied bass guitar with Carmen, and went on to be a professional musician in Nashville. He recorded and performed with saxophonist Boots Randolph for years, while also enjoying a career as a music teacher. He's apparently pretty good at it! (Posted by a parent: "Another thing I love about Donelson is the music program. My Daughter has been in Band since day one and loves it. Thank you so much Sam Oliva and Keith Heim for giving our kids the gift of music.")
